Trains of bogie wagons took processed sugar from Rarawai Mill 50km to Lautoka for export. The same happened at Penang Mill, although the run was only 10km. Despite increased use of road transport in the late 1990s Fiji cane tramways still handled 50% of the cane traffic. The main sequence of slides was taken by Peter Hodge between 1954 and 1957, several had suffered fungal and other damage but have been included because of their unique nature. There are also a number of slides from Derek Cross taken in the same period. The sugar cane railways of Fiji are documented in the book Cane Train (ISBN 0-908573-50-2) by Peter Dyer and Peter Hodge (New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society, Box 5134, Wellington, New Zealand). The maps are reproduced from it by kind permission of the society.
