Raj Steam - Bangladesh Metre Gauge Both the Eastern Bengal State Railway (EBR) and the Assam Bengal Railway) ABT had a similar locomotive policy for the metre gauge lines within Bangladesh. By the time of this compilation, with very few exceptions, most steam locomotives were either BESA 4-6-0s, IRS YB or YD or McArthur (MAWD in India) 2-8-2s. Since Bangladesh / East Pakistan had neither coal nor oil, dieselisation was a priority but this was held back by the poverty of the country. While many branch trains were steam hauled in the 1970s, by the early 1980s these were the exception and visitors reported steam in use for shunting and departmental traffic only. |
