Su I-Jaw has
sent me lists of preserved locomotives in Taiwan.
See also some of his pictures of restored steam
locomotives.
The list was updated in December 2011 thanks to a report from Steve Pratt of
his October 2011 visit. It has been further updated following my own visit in
March 2015 by observation and from Su I-Jaw's website - http://citycat.theweb.tw/indexeng.htm
- link broken 1st November 2018.
Those in BLUE were seen on a March 2015 visit to
Taiwan.
The rendering of Chinese names into Pinyin is a constant headache, the
hyphenated form previously used on this page (and still present) bears only a passing resemblance to that on road signs and I have amended
those for which I have observations, although of
course the phonetics are much the same.

Display locations of sugar cane steam locomotives in Taiwan.
the second column relies on personal observation in March 2015, Su's web pages and the Chinese language "The Illustrated Handbook
of Taiwan Light Railway and Industrial Railway Rolling Stock" published in
Taipei in 2011. NB From this 347, 358, 360, 362, 363, 372, 527, 532, 535 are now in
Japan.
Tourist trains, normally diesel hauled, are to be found at Xihu, Suantou,
Sinying/Xinying and Wushulin (I believe not a mill as such but a cane collection
point). As of March 2015, 346 was operating on Sundays (2 trains) at Xihu while
346 at Wushulin although serviceable was not used regularly, apparently it worked over
Chinese New Year 2015. Formerly, there was a short tourist train service at
Ciaotou (Taiwan Sugar Museum), we visited on a weekend and saw no sign of it, a
security guard confirmed this but we have no official information on it. There are
many diesels at the four locations, Su I-Jaw's site indicates that there are more at Huwei and
(possibly Shanhua) which are reported to still
be processing sugar and other mills. At all the mills visited there was still
masses of rolling stock and usually the original station used for local
passenger services was still present. All steam locomotives are 0-6-0T and
762mm / 2' 6" gauge unless otherwise indicated
