This is one of a series of pages which I have uploaded to
illustrate facets of steam rallies we have attended in the UK.
Such events occur all over the country in the summer months, they are easily
found by using your favourite search engine and may have anything between a
handful of steam engines and hundreds (as at the Great Dorset Steam Fair
which could probably be fairly described as having an excess of riches). Click here for
the overall index for 2026.
Abergavenny is less than an hour from our home, it's got a
special atmosphere as it's held in Bailey Park in the middle of town - we
popped out to the Morrisons opposite to top up our bottled water! Typically,
it had 14 road engines present, including five from the Saunders collection
which put on four performances daily, it must have been exhausting for the
dancers..
This is the third year in a row we have come here since we
restarted. It usually has a conservative selection of regular engines which
rotate. These are the two engines which I had not seen here before. The
roller on the left is Aveling Barford AC 601/1937 which I had seen elsewhere. On
the right is Marshall traction engine 29944/1898 formerly at the Severnside
Enginerium at Churcham near Gloucester. It's in beautiful unrestored condition.
Look out for it at Welland in July.
Overall it was a hot cloudless day and
there was a large crowd present. Yuehong did her best to empty the plant
stall and we enjoyed a gentle drive home through the beautiful border
countryside. Serious gricing will start soon!
