Old Warden Steam Rally 2016 |

|
This is one of a series of pages which I have uploaded to illustrate facets of steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Such events occur all over the country in the summer months, they are easily found by using your favourite search engine and may have anything between a handful of steam engines and hundreds (as at the Great Dorset Steam Fair which could probably be fairly described as having an excess of riches). Click here for the Old Warden index and click here for the overall 2016 index. By working engines, I mean steam engines which did more than sit looking beautiful or amble round the main arena to have their pictures taken. To these engines should be added the many showman's engines which were generating electricity for the rides. Click here for a video clip which includes the sawing, threshing, steam yachts and the Shand Mason fire engine. The SteamScenes links for these engines appear on the individual engine type pages. The fire engine is Shand Mason (1456/1876) running with a replacement pump after the original was stolen in 2015. The smaller pump is a Merryweather (8600/1944) similar to that at Fawley Hill. Both pumps were servicing the road engines which would drop by from time to time for a fill up:
Lady Go Lightly (Savage 664) was working the Gallopers, for more pictures see our visit to Llandudno in 2015. The Steam Yachts are a treasure, basically the engine 'Reg' (Savage 867/1915) gives the yachts a push like someone giving a child a push on a swing, organ engine 868/1915 is also present. There are more pictures in the Old Warden 2013 report.
The Marshall portable (89269/1942) was working a stone crusher and towards the end of the day Aveling and Porter 9246 was sent down to complete the job
Steam Ploughing Steam ploughing was again on offer. I made a brief visit to the field by the car park where Sunrise and Sunset (Fowler 14247/14248 of 1915) were working with a 6 furrow Fowler anti-balance plough.
Steam Sawing Two saw benches were working, one with regular performer Hildary (Ruston and Hornsby 115100/1922). The second engine is Black Jack (Fowler 7788/1897) making its first outing for 16 years.
Steam Threshing Small Marshall tractor (36258/1902) driving a Marshall thresher as previously - lots of dust!
Showman's Engines The Iron Maiden (Fowler, 15657/1920) and Princess Maud (Garrett, 33284/1918) were powering Atkinson's Oktoberfest Organ. Many of the engines by the fairground were powering the rides there.
