Fawley Hill Steam Rally 2016
Working Steam Engines

This is one of a series of pages which I have uploaded to illustrate facets of steam rallies we have attended in the UK (since 2013). Such events occur all over the country in the summer months, they are easily found by using your favourite search engine and may have anything between a handful of steam engines and hundreds (as at the Great Dorset Steam Fair which could probably be fairly described as having an excess of riches). Click here for the Fawley Hill index and click here for the overall 2016 index.

There was much more to this steam rally than road engines...

Steam Locomotive

The Fawley Hill estate has an extremely steep standard gauge 'garden' railway on which Hudswell Clarke (1026/1913) 0-6-0ST 'Sir Robert McAlpine' was giving rides to the visitors. Direct access to the line is only possible at the top station although there were a couple of view points of the final ascent to it. In the background are parts of the old Blackfriars iron bridge and London and South Western Railway archways . There is also a railway museum stuffed with an eclectic mix of railwayana. The 'tunnel' beyond the locomotive in the final picture is actually the railways shed.

Steam Pump

This Merryweather (8591/1944) semi-portable pump was built for the Ministry of Defence. Normally, it would be moved with a two wheel trolley, but it was fitted with a couple of large lugs so it could be carried on poles by variously 4, 6 or 8 squaddies. It was on one of the platforms at the station for filling the steam locomotive.

Fairground Centre Engines

These were the same as in 2014.

One set of Gallopers was being powered by a Savage centre engine (664/1896, Lady Go Lightly), the organ engine did not seem to be in use.

Parked next to the refreshment tent again was another Savage engine (537/1887) which was being used to generate electricity. It was once owned by Bill McAlpine.

Road Making

The "Vintage Road Making Team" I have seen regularly at the Welland Steam Rally were in attendance improving a track through the Fawley Hill estate.

Steam Sawing

Burrell 3917/1921 was coupled up to an Allchin saw bench although I didn't manage to catch it at work.
