Marcle Steam Rally 2013
Working Steam

This is one of a series of pages which I have uploaded to illustrate facets of steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Such events occur all over the country in the summer months, they are easily found by using your favourite search engine and may have anything between a handful of steam engines and hundreds (as at the Great Dorset Steam Fair which could probably be fairly described as having an excess of riches). Click here for the Marcle index and click here for the overall index.

One of the special features of the better steam rallies is the provision of areas where a demonstration of working steam takes place. I have uploaded a separate page on 'Ploughing with Steam"

Threshing and Baling

The Barrows and Carmichael portable (316 ca 1865), a rare breed.

The Marshall thresher

The Nicholson baler, shades of bagasse baler in Javan sugar mills.

An atmospheric view of the whole set up.

Traditional Sawing

The sawing area was less than optimal in terms of photography as the rear ends of the engines faced the midday sun (when it came out).

Burrell 2003/1897 was the power for one half.

Close ups of the 'sharp end' of the engine with the belt running off the flywheel.

The saw resting between turns.

Aveling and Porter 2436/1889 was on the other saw.

The grand old lady was the oldest road engine on display (the B&M portable is older)

The saw in operation with a small section of narrow gauge track in use.
