Weeting Steam Engine Rally and Country Show (July 20th - 22nd, 2018)

Weeting qualifies as a 'large' rally and this was its 50th. What makes this rally stand out, though, is the quality of its working areas with some 20 road engines on display. Our visit in 2017 had been a huge disappointment as over a whole weekend there was no more than one hour of sunshine on the Friday early evening and rather than struggle in the gloom, we resolved to return even though it would mean missing our own local rally at Much Marcle which is very special to us. It was the right decision, Weeting's 50th was one of the best, maybe even the best, that we have attended in the last five years. Friday's forecast was mediocre, so we used it to travel up gently given the distance involved. Saturday was glorious, Yuehong had to drag me away and when Sunday dawned rather cloudy, I took the decision to be sociable with our host and we went for a lovely walk in the Waveney Valley between Suffolk and Norfolk while no doubt the sun eventually shone on the rally again. I had my stills record, the video of the working area will just have to wait for a few years until we come back again.
The organisers had pushed out the boat for this year's event, there were over 20 extra engines present. Given that a significant proportion of those we saw last year are resident or regular visitors this was a significant addition. For the grand parade, the engines were necessarily double banked.
