Somerset Steam and Country Show (18th - 20th July, 2014) |

|
This is one of a series of pages I have uploaded to illustrate facets of the steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Click here for the 2014 introduction and overall index. What was once the Somerset Steam Spectacular has rebranded itself The emphasis on steam appears reduced and the programme listed less than 30 expected road engines compared to over 40 a few years ago, the organisers will no doubt have their reasons for this, presumably related to expense. In the event we saw 23 on Friday and it is probable that more would have arrived before the show opened fully on the Saturday. I had a cunning plan to visit Boconnoc on Friday, Langport on Saturday and Marcle on Sunday, the car and B&B were booked well in advance. The Great British weather thought this not a good idea. As I write, we are back home on Saturday with rain coming down over most of south-west England. We are committed for family reasons to visit Marcle for what may be a damp Sunday if humanly possible while further west is set to enjoy a pleasant summer's day. Nevertheless we did enjoy the preview day in Somerset, first trying to track down a few steamers in the country lanes, then enjoying an embryonic line up of early arrivals before relaxing with the live entertainment ('The Mangled Wurzels' and 'Mustang Sally').
