Steam from Moçambique |

International No. 10 contains an 8 page article by Dusty Durrant on Zambeze
Sugar Steam which lists the known locomotives of the narrow gauge sugar railways in the
country. (Please write to Paul Catchpole, 47, Glenwood Road, Kings Norton, Birmingham B38
8HE,UK if you want a copy - he is not on Email. The cost is £3.75 surface mail Worldwide
- add 75p for AirMail.) The Civil War there has not exactly facilitated visits, but
it was generally accepted that the locomotives survived. Now it seems that most have been
sold for export although the modern (1950s) Pecketts are being retained and will work
again in due course. Peter Nash has put together this summary of the current position -

"The following engines exist and are being returned from Moçambique : Marromeu No 1 0-8-0T Henschel 15540/17 Luabo No 1 0-8-0T Henschel 14681/16 Of these, the 3 Fowler 0-4-2Ts, 1 Fowler 0-6-0T (actually a well-tank), 1 Fowler 0-6-2T, 1 Henschel 0-4-0T and 13 Feldbahns (9 of the Henschels and 1 Hanomag, 1 Hartmann, 2 Schwartzkopf & 1 O&K) are back, making a total of 19 back with a maximum (I think) of seven to come back. From the article in Locomotives International, this leaves several engines unaccounted for, including the 6 Peckett 0-6-0ST/0-6-0T which are staying to be used on the new estate. With a big of juggling, it can therefore be said that from the 44 engines identified in the article, that 19 are back with a possible 7 left to come, with the 6 above staying, leaving 12 engines not accounted for. I estimate these to be : - Marromeu Original 1-3 Luabo 8 Probably 0-4-2T ex Mopeia (I believe that the 3ft 0in gauge locomotives have somehow got missed out and are still present. RD) |
