Java Sugar Steam 2002 - Kediri Area Mills

These mills are operated by PTP Nusantara X, previously PTP XXI\XXII, before that PNP XXI/XXII, and before that PNP XXI and PNP XXII. Individual and group visitors who check in officially can expect to be charged the equivalent of U$6 per person per mill. At first sight, this area seems less affected by the problems in the industry than Solo and Madiun, but Mojopanggung must be under threat.

24. LESTARI Mill Index

If there are any locos left here they will be wrecks, the 3 remaining good locos now being at Gempolkerep.

25. MERICAN Mill Index

On 1st July 2002, I found 6 and 8 at work in the delivery yard as usual during the early evening. Loco staff said that the same locomotives as last year were active and I confirmed 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8 were working on 20th July. On August 5th, the situation was normal except that there was not much cane on offer and the nighttime fireworks were a little disappointing. On 19th September we found the mill very active with the prospect of working right through November.... Most visitors don't get to see 2 which hides behind the mill....

26. PESANTREN Mill Index

This is the best (nearly the only) place in the World to see narrow gauge Mallets at work. In the late afternoon of 1st July, 216 was at work in the delivery yard and the crew said another Mallet was also at work. They said that 214, 226 and 228 were all serviceable but the mill was short of bagasse and more locomotives might work later in the season....   On 21st July 214 and 226 worked the morning shift in the yard along with a couple of diesels. On 6th August 226 and 228 were very busy in the early morning as the big diesel had failed... On 18th September, 214 and 226 were again at work with a diesel, but the next day saw a mill failure in the morning with the gates locked and no action at all.

27. NGADIREJO Mill Index

Likely to have a couple of Mallets in light steam under the trees again.

28. MOJOPANGGUNG Mill Index

I did not make a visit in 2001 but I guess steam was in use there and will be again in 2002 .

29. JOMBANG BARU Mill Index

No trace of steam locos remains here.

30. CUKIR Mill Index

The remaining steam locos were sold to the Kediri scrap merchant in 1996.

31. GEMPOLKEREP Mill Index

A healthy steam operation in 2000 and 2001.I stopped by on June 26th to pre-pay for my group's Sunday visit owing to previous problems here. I took the opportunity to check out the action around 14.00. 3-L and 15 were working the empties, Luttermöllers 4 and 12 were next to the mill. On shed were 11, 18 and 19 and 4 Japanese diesels ready to work the afternoon shift. 2 was spare, 8 was set up to act as a stationary boiler and the other locos were stored in various states of disrepair. I grabbed a couple of shots: On 21st July things were exactly the same but the mill was less busy than usual. However, we did find the Luttermöllers more photogenic than usual on the front of their trains at roughly 2 hour intervals - I missed the best action in the late afternoon as I was away rounding up my group.

32. TULANGAN Mill Index

Three of the remaining steam locos were sold to the Kediri scrap merchant in 1995; the other presumably was scrapped.
