It is not known why the company opted for a narrower gauge than the other mills in the area. Certainly, plans existed to convert it to 3ft (914mm) which, with just a few short connections to be built, would have allowed inter-working with the adjacent Hawaiian-Philippine system to the south (and on to the other systems of the same gauge, all of which seem to have linked up once). Of course, there is now no prospect of this happening. One effect of the gauge was to make the loaded cane cars appear very unstable. Henschel 0-8-0T 4 provided the appropriate signs of life for the visitor as it arrived on a full train on 1st April 1973. (BR) |
