Hawaiian-Philippine Company

The Hawaiian-Philippine Company, despite its name, has been Hong Kong owned throughout its long acquaintance with the enthusiast fraternity. This has undoubtedly meant better management, which allowed it to pass relatively unscathed through the various crises which brought the industry to its knees from the 1970s through to the present day. It may now be an unfashionable concept, but an expatriate (British) manager was in a better position to take a longer term view than the typical absentee Philippino owners who regarded the sugar mills as mere cash cows in times good and bad. However, there was never any chance that Negros would become an efficient producer in international terms and long term decline was inevitable as these pictures of one of the world's great 3ft (914mm) gauge systems show.
