The colonial powers found the inhabitants of the area fragmented into tribes which they tried with varying degrees of success to integrate into what became the nations of today. Many of the more recent steam locomotives carried tribal names such as 'Karamojong' on 3130 at Kisumu on 8th April 1973. (CW2)
