This is one of a series of pages which I have uploaded to
illustrate facets of steam rallies we have attended in the UK.
Such events occur all over the country in the summer months, they are easily
found by using your favourite search engine and may have anything between a
handful of steam engines and hundreds (as at the Great Dorset Steam Fair
which could probably be fairly described as having an excess of riches). Click here for
the overall index for 2024.
Abergavenny is less than an hour from our home but we
haven't been for 9 years! Back then it then appeared to be fading away
steamwise and since there has always been something else to do over the late May Bank Holiday. As
such a revisit was overdue. We were pleasantly surprised to find 15 engines
present of which 1/3 were from the Saunders collective - who also provided
some excellent traditional stage entertainment.
Once again this year there was no new engine for me and the main
disappointment was that the ground was far too wet for a parade. There had
been overnight rain on
top of what is now a notoriously wet spell. However, the
short road run around three sides of Bailey Park was unaffected which was
just as well as most engines then hid along a tree covered road. The
occasional patches of mud didn't put the punters off and attendance on
Sunday was good.
