The International Steam Pages

H.J. Pugh Auction (27th - 28th October, 2023)

This is one of a series of pages which I have uploaded to illustrate facets of steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Such events occur all over the country in the summer months, they are easily found by using your favourite search engine and may have anything between a handful of steam engines and hundreds (as at the Great Dorset Steam Fair which could probably be fairly described as having an excess of riches). Click here for the overall index for 2023.

I was familiar with H. J. Pugh (https://www.hjpugh.com) through auctions at Welland and Much Marcle steam rallies and I had assumed that it was a typical small rural auctioneer and estate agent. In fact it is much more than that and they have large premises on the outskirts of Ledbury where they have regular auctions including not only farm machinery but stationary engines, motorcycles etc. A post on the Traction Talk Forum tipped me off that their next sale would include three road steam engines. The two steam rollers are unusual in that they spent their working life with Murdoch MacKenzie, seem to have had a single owner in preservation and appear to be essentially 'as delivered'. I believe neither has been seen in public since the 1980s. Both have the results of a boiler inspection attached indicating, not surprisingly, that both will need, at least, a retube. The other engine is a roller conversion according to the TER and was parked, somewhat unfortunately in the shadow of the green roller.  I attended a very quiet viewing day on 27th October, I have since added the realisations below.
