This is one of a series of pages which I have uploaded to
illustrate facets of steam rallies we have attended in the UK.
Such events occur all over the country in the summer months, they are easily
found by using your favourite search engine and may have anything between a
handful of steam engines and hundreds (as at the Great Dorset Steam Fair
which could probably be fairly described as having an excess of riches). Click here for
the overall index for 2022.
Hollowell, like Banbury, has undergone a change of management.
The new committee took over at fairly short notice and was offering a slimmed
down rally which would nevertheless maintain as many of the well proven elements
as possible. We went a little further north to Elvaston and this report is
courtesy of collaborator Paul Gilbey, to whom, as usual, I am extremely
grateful for the pictures. He attended on Saturday, unfortunately he had a prior
engagement on the Sunday when the weather was significantly better. Paul
comments "The Rally was indeed much smaller than past rallies at Hollowell but this was well publicised;
many of the features at the rally were retained and they should be commended for this.
There were only 19 steam engines listed in the programme with four no shows and one additional engine which was not listed. Sadly again no showman’s engines were present or steam wagons as had been advertised. The standard of the restoration of the Allchin roller Wks No 1187 was very high with the final paint being applied to the engine on the Thursday before the rally."
The steam section is, of course, unrecognisable from
before but I would have had two new engines which would have been not too
bad if I had come here instead of Elvaston.
