This is one of a series of pages which I have uploaded to
illustrate facets of steam rallies we have attended in the UK.
Such events occur all over the country in the summer months, they are easily
found by using your favourite search engine and may have anything between a
handful of steam engines and hundreds (as at the Great Dorset Steam Fair
which could probably be fairly described as having an excess of riches). Click here for
the overall index for 2014.
The Strawberries and Steam Rally at Wanborough (east
Swindon), like that at Kelsall,
was one that I found about very late in the day, coinciding with our long
planned visit to Bloxham / Banbury. On the basis that it was less likely to
provide working steam, we elected to go on the first day when the weather
forecast was somewhat mixed. So mixed, in fact that we almost turned back at
Cricklade. Eventually the lure of steam was too strong and we only had to
take shelter in the beer tent once during our morning visit, albeit the sun
was invisible throughout. Going home needless to say we spent half the
journey under clear blue skies although there had obviously been downpours.
No doubt there will be pictures in the Traction
Talk forum (registration required) that show that we should have had
more patience. Anyway there's always next year and it's only an hour from
home. Maybe then we'll need some of their strawberries but at the moment we
have a glut here. The show was only 'small' in the sense that the number of
non-steam vehicles was quite limited (I am not complaining) and I recorded
29 steam engines, which was had been promised and the organisers are
to be commended for their recruiting such a splendid variety.
