Steam Plough Club 'Hands-On' 2021
Steam at Work

This is one of a series of pages which I have uploaded to illustrate facets of steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Such events occur all over the country in the summer months, they are easily found by using your favourite search engine and may have anything between a handful of steam engines and hundreds (as at the Great Dorset Steam Fair which could probably be fairly described as having an excess of riches). We arrived during the lunch break when the sun was high and shining right along the middle of the field. It was much later before the angle improved, but by the time ploughing activities finished, it was almost acceptable as can be seen. Necessarily the participants on the engines on the east side of the field got photographed as they were looking towards the sun while working. Pair 1 were doing the initial plough and Pair 2 then took the cultivator over their 'work'. It was very difficult to photograph Pair 2 as the cable for the Pair 1 was roughly where I needed to stand for most of the potential shots...

This was the scene at the 'close of play'. As we had been based overnight in Pontefract for the Yorkshire Traction Engine Rally on the Saturday, there was no way we could have been here in time for the start of activities so we went to the newly restored ruins of the castle there first.
