Steam Plough Club 'Hands-On' 2021
Basic Equipment

This is one of a series of pages which I have uploaded to illustrate facets of steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Such events occur all over the country in the summer months, they are easily found by using your favourite search engine and may have anything between a handful of steam engines and hundreds (as at the Great Dorset Steam Fair which could probably be fairly described as having an excess of riches). Click here for the Steam Plough Club 'Hands-On' 2021 index and click here for the overall index for 2021.

Details below were taken by observation and also David Collidge's Steam Scenes site http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/ which continues to be the most reliable source of information.

It was good to see two proper pairs at wok together - 15182/15183 and 15451/2, both pairs were present at the same event here in 2018..

Notes - these are the same as were used in 2018.

Fowler This reversible 6 furrow plough with land-press is owned by Michael Davies. Number 13689, a bevel-frame, anti-balance, semi-digger built in 1923 (converted from a 5f shallow sub-soiling plough & now fitted with a draft bar attachment for a land press)

Compared to a simple balance plough, this kind shifts its centre of gravity backwards as it starts up after reversal. This additional weight on the rear end helps prevent it riding out of its work. Of course, the opposite happens when it is reversed at the other end of the pull.

The reversible 4 furrow plough is on loan from Nottingham City Museums. Number 12861, a bevel frame, anti-balance, semi-digger built in 1917

Fowler

The turning Cultivator is now owned by Joe Nourish (ex. Michael Davies). Number 12749, heavy type, 11/13 tynes, new in 1917.

This is less disruptive to the soil and was by far more used than the full plough.
