Welland Steam Rally (29th - 31st July 2022)

This is one of a series of pages I have uploaded to illustrate facets of the steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Click here for the 2022 introduction and overall index.

As always, the Welland Rally was a really special show. I skipped Thursday's road run to the Drum and Monkey at Upton upon Severn as it was overcast. One visitor said only two engines got there, the rest must have gone to another pub. Friday started bright and very sunny but from midday the clouds gathered and by the time the parade started it was overcast. Saturday was largely overcast all day, not that it kept the crowds away, only heavy rain can do that. Sunday in Mitcheldean (20 miles west) started cloudy with odd spells of drizzle but the afternoon was a right old mixture. Having got home after midnight there was no chance I would be tempted to return for more! I was delighted to find seven previously unseen engines, the total being boosted by two entries which had come across the Irish Sea for restoration.

The pictures here were taken on Friday up till 15.30 and on Saturday from 15.30, the latter as we wanted to see the fairground at night, the Abba tribute band Abalicious and the fireworks. I find it extraordinarily difficult to get a comprehensive photographic record here because the Malvern Hills seem to drive away any afternoon sunshine which is needed for those engines (including the showman's engines), which are badly placed in the morning when what sunshine there is tends to occur. Again, invariably the dried out cut grass is anything but green which distorts the colour balance.
