Old Warden Steam Rally (13th - 15th September, 2013)

This is one of a series of pages I have uploaded to illustrate facets of the seven steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Click here for the 2013 introduction and overall index.

Six down and one to go! When we had first confessed to our new hobby, old friend David Longman suggested we stay with him to attend the event at Shuttleworth / Old Warden. It's quite a long journey by our standards but when we found it was probably second only to the Great Dorset Steam Fair for engine quality and quantity, it was a simple decision to go for it. Unfortunately, by now the weather had broken and we attended for just one day. Although Saturday saw little rain, there had been so much overnight that the engines were 'confined to barracks' and indeed as you will see from the pictures, some never made it off their trailers before we left. The highlight for me had to be Harry Lee's Steam Yachts but the assembled 120 engines were as good as expected. The sun finally came out back in Bedford for 5 minutes just before sunset but it was too late for us. We abandoned what was clearly going to be a wet Sunday but that allowed us to visit the working beam engine at Combe Mill. Be sure to watch our YouTube video of it.
