Elvaston Steam Rally (July 2nd - 3rd, 2022)

This is one of a series of pages I have uploaded to illustrate facets of the steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Click here for the 2022 introduction and overall index.

Elvaston proved again to be the medium-large rally which we had visited in 2014 and 2018 both times on our way back from Helmsley. Both occasions had been largely sunny but this time on the Sunday we were greeted with overcast skies but with the promise of sun later. I took a set of 'backup pictures' and soaked up the ambience, Elvaston being a well organised traditional rally where 'steam' is at the centre of everything and internal combustion machines are in a supporting role at best. Finally, a small patch of blue sky appeared which grew larger. It never cleared completely but I was able to get a proper record of most of the engines present although a number had already packed up and left by the time I went to look for them and in the ring the angles were less than perfect.

Most of the engines were local and familiar, although there were three new ones for me, most noticeably an Aveling and Porter tractor which seems to have vanished into a shed around 1978 and which had only recently been liberated. Probably it will look very different when next I record it.
