Elvaston Steam Rally (5th - 6th July, 2014)

This is one of a series of pages I have uploaded to illustrate facets of the steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Click here for the 2014 introduction and overall index.

Elvaston is a medium-large rally which was very much a last minute addition to what had been intended as a purely Yorkshire weekend. In fact being almost exactly half way home, it was a perfect break point on the Sunday and hugely enjoyable as, like Helmsley, steam very much took precedence. In this case most of the engines were set out in a large horseshoe which meant that all could be photographed satisfactorily at some stage, often on both sides. The organisers must be congratulated for producing the best programme I have encountered, the steam entries were complete, detailed and very informative. The highlight for me was a certain steam roller owner rushing after me as he had been on a couple of my Java tours. Knowing his interest, I had made a point of stopping off for as many of the known preserved rollers there as possible and this may have had the effect of germinating my interest in steam road engines. Yuehong was summoned and a suitable photograph taken, of course she had been helping run the tour with me.
