Northern Railway - Narrow Gauge |
||
|
By the 1970s the Northern Railway possessed just one narrow steam gauge 'line' and that was the 2ft 6in (762mm) gauge Dhilwan Sleeper Depot between Jullundur and Amritsar. The Northern Railway had two passenger carrying railways, the Kalka - Simla line and the Kangra Valley line, but these were dieselised by the time of this compilation. However, the Martins 2ft 6in (762mm) line between Shahdara (Delhi) and Saharanpur had closed ca 1970 and while initially I had just half a dozen pictures of this little known railway taken on an unknown date in its later years, I have now added a number of colour slides of a journey down the line, the like of which I had never seen previously. The area was by no means otherwise devoid of narrow gauge steam railways but these were all of an industrial nature serving sugar mills and these will be covered separately in due course.
