A guide to the smaller steam pumps in Java's sugar mills

Click here for an introduction to Java's sugar mills and their stationary steam engines

Steam pumps (other than vacuum pumps) tend to be rather smaller than the other engines covered in this guide.

The largest ones I have seen are at Krembung (used to drive their centrifuges). This one is used to pump juice at Purwodadi:

This water pump for the centrifugals is at Purwodadi and is one of very few engines built by Sangerhausen:

Typical of molasses/massecuite pumps is this one at Pangka:

This is a similar machine from Halle at Tulangan used as an air compressor to burn sulphur:

It has to be said that most are fairly modest affairs. Typical juice pumps like these are vertical and known as 'Java Pomps', many (like this one at Panji) built by Reineveld in Netherlands:

Although Tasik Madu boasts a 'super' version:

Finally we see the humble 'steam lizard' often used for such tasks as boiler feedwater, many of which originate from the USA like this Cameron at Panji used as a syrup pump:

European builders are represented here by this Wegelin and Hübner, Halle boiler feed water pump at Pajarakan:
