C5317

C5317

C5317 was constructed by Werkspoor (492/1922). It was originally Staats Spoorwegen 1017. This compound 4-6-2 had two inside cylinders 340 x 580 mm and two outside cylinders 520 x 580 mm with driving wheel diameter of 1600 mm. Boiler pressure was 14.0 kg/cm2, grate area 2.7 m2 with a heating surface of 123.3 m2 and a superheater surface of 43.0 m2. Overall weight was 66.3 tons with 37.2 tons available for adhesion. C5317 is preserved at Taman Mini near Jakarta. Locomotives of this class once worked the main express passengers services in Java and the last examples survived on local passenger trains between Bangil and Surabaya in East Java into the 1970s. (On a personal note, this is the locomotive I would most like to see restored to action in the long term as I never saw one working. RD)
