Sweet Dreams Video Clips 1991-1999

Some time ago I uploaded a set of pictures of Java's sugar mills under the title 'Those were the Days 1975-1997'. I am now editing my video 8 archive shot between 1991 and 1999 and to celebrate a big birthday in 2013 when I shall NOT be in Java, I am uploading clips from each of the mills in the same order as before to YouTube, approximately weekly.

Having now completed the nationalised mills of West and Central Java, the oil palm railways of North Sumatra and the Cepu Forest Railway, I am back with the nationalised sugar mills of East Java.

The good news is that there is nearly 50 hours of it, mostly shot in the first half of the decade before the first wave of mill closures. The bad news is that although I used a tripod throughout, the resolution of just 352 x 288 and the inherent problems with the format mean that there is simply no comparison with the kind of quality offered by the digital cameras that appeared a few years later - by which time, of course, it was too late for much of what is shown here.

I anticipate uploading clips amounting to just over one hour which will obviously be a small fraction of the total. If there is sufficient interest (OK to be honest any interest), then I will sell a series of DVDs with a special emphasis on the best of the action and those mills where steam did not last past the Millenium. The video is 100% 'gricer' and contains no human interest! If that is what you are interested in then our Olean DVD 'Sweet Spot' does that job perfectly (and the picture quality is infinitely better!).

700mm gauge Orenstein & Koppel Olean 5 and 7 double head a long train through Karang Malang on 13th August 1997. Cutting had been well east of the main road on the Semiring line and the small diesel had been used instead of the usual water buffalo. The answer to your question is 60 including the 3 left behind, it was probably the longest cane train I ever saw in Java.

600mm gauge Orenstein & Koppel 0-8-0T Cepiring 1 tidies up on 'the morning after the night before', 24th August 1994. The mill closed at the end of the 1997 season. It subsequently re-opened many years later under new ownership but the rail operation now is minimal.

600mm gauge Jung 0-8-0 Sragi 17 takes a load of cane across the main line west of Comal station on 27th August 1997. All the field lines here were ripped up at the end of the 2003 season although steam continues to work in the yard in 2013.

Du Croo & Brauns 0-8-0T Kadhipaten 3 brings in a load of cane to the mill on the afternoon of 9th August 1991 (added 3rd July 2013). The mill closed after the 1998 season.
