Dongtonghua Steelworks, visited on February 19th 2002

This visit of a six-person group was accompanied by a CITS-guide and a minibus. Though we had ordered the visit, the CITS guide had not asked for a permit in advance! So, he and a member of the group were "invited" by local police.

Dongtonghua steelworks are situated 8km northeast of Tonghua. It is a medium-sized mixed steel factory with five blast furnaces in two groups. Main products are hot strip (coils) and wires. The works railway uses SYs and GK diesels. Steam locos operate funnel first into the works. We were told that use of steam will finish next year (2003). You can find the described places in the drawing.

The trip started at the connection between CNR and the works railway. Next to a secondary entrance gate you will find the depot. We noted the following locos there: GK1 0028, 0036, 0088, 0094 and SY 0644, 1477, 1479 under steam and SY 0311, 0582, 0584, 0645 and 3008 cold. At the transshipping point of the steel mill, SY 1480 shunted carriages loaded with bars. Then we went to the inner area. SY 1362 waited at the first group of blast furnaces. Short time later it shunted open hot metal cars under the furnaces. SY 0848 passed with cars loaded with dust. After this, SY 0644 served the second blast furnace group and the pig iron machine. Near the coke plant, we noted a purpose-built special loco. It carried extingiushed coke. Another similar loco waited there as spare engine, too. SY 1477 passed light engine and fetched some carriages. Back at the connection yard we took pictures of shunting SY 0848, SY 1480 and GK1 0094 the latter one light engine. SY 1362 passed with hot metal cars. At the coal unloading point which is situated outside the works area, GK1 0036 was seen with a coal train.
