The International Steam Pages
Great Dorset Steam Fair 2019
This is one of a series of pages which I have uploaded to illustrate facets of steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Such events occur all over the country in the summer months, they are easily found by using your favourite search engine and may have anything between a handful of steam engines and hundreds (as at the Great Dorset Steam Fair which could probably be fairly described as having an excess of riches). Some people visit the GDSF just for the evening and now we knew the system well, we spent much of the afternoon relaxing watching the continuous and spectacular action in the playpen / heavy haulage area. By the time that finished some time after 18.00 it wasn't that long before the sun started to go down. The gallopers look good in daylight but with their lights they look quite magical:
Fowler 'Royal Sovereign' and Garrett 'Invincible' caught the last rays of the setting sun:
Inevitably, the crowds start to gather and four unobstructed engines represent as many as can reasonably be guaranteed..
We were trying out a new camera, not cheap but definitely not expensive so the evening was an experiment. I needed to see the results on a proper screen before investing too much effort, everything was shot on 'Auto' without benefit of a tripod. The results were good enough for a web page so I've scheduled an evening at Welland next year...
We'd been up at 06.00 for a full breakfast back at base before arriving at opening time (08:00) to avoid the expected queues. In fact, there hadn't been any as we discovered later but we had another full day ahead and needed some sleep so we soon slipped off into the night.
