Shrewsbury Steam Rally (28th - 29th August, 2016)

This is one of a series of pages I have uploaded to illustrate facets of the steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Click here for the 2016 introduction and overall index.

Originally, we had intended to give Shrewsbury a miss this time round, but Europcar had given us vouchers in compensation for their system wrongly blocking most of the funds in our bank account for a week and the weather forecast for the Bank Holiday Monday was 'stonking'. So we bought our E Tickets to avoid the queue, dragged ourselves out of bed at an unearthly hour and headed north up the A 49 and then around the back lanes to come in on the A 458, a technique which had served us well in 2014 and 2015..Along the way, we stumbled on this superb Sentinel Waggon on its way to the rally. We knew to expect more or less a rerun of previous events, bur it was still a great day out in the sun, especially as the queues seemed rather less this year although the site itself seemed almost as full as ever. All bar the wagons were well lit in the morning but unfortunately, the latter tend to park close together and when they moved back from the Grand Parade, the sun more or less vanished, cue some late afternoon inventive photography.

I haven't included a separate working engines page this year as again there was almost nothing new, but I did get some nice steam ploughing pictures. The sawing area had moved to the playpen, a much better location, to accommodate the horses which were this year's 'special'. Unfortunately, no-one told the programme producer who wasn't having a good year as steam roller entries 54 and 55 ('Silver Cloud' and 'Joan') were left out, I hope someone said 'Sorry'. As always there were some apparent 'no shows', my apologies if any did attend and I missed them.

David Collidge's Steam Scenes website ( is a fount of information and was a great help in compiling these pages.
