The International Steam Pages

Rempstone Steam and Country Show (9th - 10th July, 2016)

This is one of a series of pages I have uploaded to illustrate facets of the steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Click here for the 2016 introduction and overall index.

It was time for yet another new venue for us, allegedly just a swift two hour journey up the motorways of Central England, but it was a summer Saturday and it was raining. So much so that on on a minor road nearing the rally we went through over a foot of flood water. We arrived apparently twenty minutes after a downpour, the car park needed no more than a little care but the showground had large puddles and the arena was off limits to all but the American Civil War foot soldiers. As with our recent visits to Fawley Hill, Banbury and Hollowell yet again the engines did little more than boil water all day. Photography was 'challenging', most of the time it was overcast and when later the sun put in appearances it tended to be in short and unpredictable bursts, long enough to photograph the nearest couple of engines and no more and if you happened to be relaxing, you missed your chance. It was Yuehong's birthday weekend so I didn't push my luck so we were gone by 15.30, however she was smiling as she had a better than average haul of 'souvenirs' from the trade stands.

Still the punters came in numbers and no-one was moaning, a Hurricane flew over, there was an aerobatics display and the beer tent did roaring business. It was another old fashioned traditional plain vanilla rally of the kind I prefer although appearing a tad lacking when it came to working engines, it seems I managed to miss the saw benches which were far from the rest of the steam. The icing on the cake was a fair number of 'not seen before' engines, after all this was a new area for us.
