Somerset Steam and Country Show (17th - 19th July, 2015)

This is one of a series of pages I have uploaded to illustrate facets of the steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Click here for the 2015 introduction and overall index.

What was once the Somerset Steam Spectacular has rebranded itself  The emphasis on steam appears reduced and despite the fact that the show was celebrating its 60th birthday, the programme listed 29 expected road engines compared to over 40 a few years ago. In the event we saw 23 of them attending with two more late entries. It seemed that there was to be no steam ploughing this year (it turned out that the crop in the normal field was running late) and when there was no sign of activity in the working area by 11.30 on the Saturday we concluded (correctly) we would be better to spend the afternoon at the Marcle Rally near our home. The emphasis these days seems to be on internal combustion farm tractors of which there were a large number present (170 in the programme). If I have slighted the show, then I would be delighted to hear that my impressions are misjudged, to be fair even now there was a fair selection of engines and the Marshall vertical boiler roller was worth the journey alone.

David Collidge's Steam Scenes website (http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/) is a fount of information and was a great help in compiling these pages.
