The International Steam Pages

FFF&B Ploughing Match and Country Show (26th September, 2015)

This is one of a series of pages which I have uploaded to illustrate facets of steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Such events occur all over the country in the summer months, they are easily found by using your favourite search engine and may have anything between a handful of steam engines and hundreds (as at the Great Dorset Steam Fair which could probably be fairly described as having an excess of riches). Click here for the overall index.

In parallel with the better know 'steam rallies', there are other mainly local shows which feature steam but not in a starring role. The numbers of engines are inevitably small but often they have strong working areas which are a particular favourite of mine. At the Fairford Steam Rally in August, I was tipped off about the Fairford, Faringdon, Filkins and Burford Ploughing Match (and Country Show) where there would be four working ploughing engine (3 steam and one diesel). And so it proved...

It was indeed a great spectacle with near perfect ploughing conditions resulting in some 'high speed ploughing'. Of course, as often happens the organisers had no thought for the photographers, all four engines were lined up facing north as the photograph above demonstrates, consequently the video stayed in the car and I had a much needed holiday, especially as the other 'working engines' were not as I would have liked either. Fortunately, four out of five them came to the main arena for a trundle before we moved on.

Working 'Steam'

David Collidge's Steam Scenes website (http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/) is a fount of information and was a great help in compiling these pages.
