The International Steam Pages

Boconnoc Steam Fair (29th - 31st July, 2016)

This is one of a series of pages I have uploaded to illustrate facets of the steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Click here for the 2016 introduction and overall index.

On the face of it, a day trip to Cornwall from West Gloucestershire sounds like total madness, but these days, the roads are good and on Summer Sundays (as opposed to Summer Saturdays) by no means overcrowded. We cruised at 70mph along the M5 and A38 (out) / A30 (back) and it took some 3 hours each way for the 180 miles just as Google Maps suggested. Was it worth it? Undoubtedly, as it saved the cost of a B&B and more importantly allowed us to visit Welland on the Saturday.

The setting is magnificent and the occasion delightfully informal with engines randomly scattered all over the hillside and the owners taking them on an extended run round it whenever it takes their fancy. With both engines and the sun playing 'hide and seek', it was quite late in the day before I convinced myself that I had not only seen but also photographed everything but it's not impossible some late entry escaped.

Yuehong voted it one of the best events we have been to and would happily repeat it next year; for someone who hates everything entailed in leaving home at 07.00, that is praise indeed.

David Collidge's Steam Scenes website ( is a fount of information and was a great help in compiling these pages.
