Banbury Steam Rally (28th - 29th June, 2014)

This is one of a series of pages I have uploaded to illustrate facets of the steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Click here for the 2014 introduction and overall index.

Banbury (at Bloxham) is a medium-large sized event, which was blessed with good weather with long sunny spells on the second day (the first was apparently 'mixed'. I assume that the 'Strawberries and Steam' Rally we had attended on the Saturday was similarly blessed. The number of steam engines was not much greater but this one had all the 'bells and whistles' too, a completely different experience, arguably the steam engines were no longer the prime attraction if the programme cover was to be believed. There were three steam powered saw benches but I was disappointed that, even though the show occupied farmland, the steam ploughing engines were restricted to a small winching demonstration in the arena, nor were the showman's engines generating during the daytime. On the other hand I was pleased to finally catch up with 'The Sheep Show', run by a South African (mercifully not a Welshman) which I had heard about long before. Not to be missed if it comes to a show near you. A real bonus for us is that the journeys to and fro take in some great Cotswold scenery.
