The International Steam Pages

Astle Park Traction Engine Rally, (8th - 9th August, 2015)

This is one of a series of pages I have uploaded to illustrate facets of the steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Click here for the 2015 introduction and overall index.

The Astle Park Rally is run by the same organisation as runs the Ashley Hall Rally we went to in May and so we knew what to expect. Indeed it was a classic 'plain vanilla' rally with an excellent selection of engines, nearly 60 full size in all. Being its 50th and the weather cooperative, there were large crowds all over the site which would have made more movement difficult. It was very good of its kind, the two minor criticisms I would have concerned the paucity of both litter bins (a very short term economy) and toilets (the queue for the ladies was likely to put people off returning). I have to say that the engines were, for the most part, well set out for conventional photography, this and the absence of 'working engines' meant that I had more time than usual to relax and watch the world (and his wife) go by. Since we were a long way from home and driving in the dark does not appeal, we had to leave before the heavy haulage demonstration which by all accounts was 'fun'.
